Family History: You may be asked about your family’s health history, particularly any conditions that might affect athletic performance.

  • Physical Examination

Height and Weight Measurement: Your height and weight will be recorded to assess growth and overall fitness.

Vital Signs: Blood pressure and pulse will be checked.

General Physical Assessment: The doctor will examine your heart, lungs, abdomen, and musculoskeletal system (joints, muscles, and bones).

Vision and Hearing Tests: Basic tests may be performed to check your vision and hearing.

  • Discussion of Participation

Injury Prevention: The doctor may discuss ways to prevent injuries, including warm-ups, proper equipment, and hydration.

Recommendations: The physician may discuss the athlete’s sport, training practices, injury prevention, nutrition, and recovery strategies.

A sports physical exam, also known as a pre-participation physical examination (PPE), is a medical assessment designed to determine whether an athlete is physically fit to participate in sports. It helps identify any potential health issues that could put the athlete at risk of injury or illness during physical activity.

Tips for Preparation:

  • Bring Medical Records: If you have previous sports physicals or relevant medical records, bring them along.

  • List of Medications: Prepare a list of any medications you are currently taking.

  • Wear Comfortable Clothing: That allows for easy movement during the exam.

A sports physical exam is not intended to replace a comprehensive annual wellness exam and other screenings.
